Eight States, 40 Registrants: SPC Helps Veterans Service Providers

The St. Philip’s College Good Samaritan Veterans Outreach and Transition Center and Thomas Edison State University team has shared today new details for the San Antonio leg of a national training program early next month for experts in helping individual veterans to make the connections between their college educations and their next jobs with a full schedule viewable online now.

The program making its St. Philip’s College debut with 40 registrants is the Certificate for Veterans’ Service Providers professional development training June 5-7 in the Bowden Alumni Center within the college’s G.J. Sutton Learning Center building at 1801 Martin Luther King Drive in the city’s Denver Heights neighborhood. Although it was previously known that the 40 registrants will come from a bevy of colleges, universities and veteran organizations in both the National Capital Region and eight states, what is now known is attendees from Texas, Tennessee, Colorado, New York, New Jersey, North Carolina, Missouri, Wyoming and Oklahoma will be joined by local and regional colleagues from San Antonio College, St. Philip’s College, Grayson College (Denison, Texas), Mary Hardin-Baylor and The University of the Incarnate Word, according to center director William Moseley. Moseley is both a retired Army colonel and a 2017 alumni of the certificate program as is colleague Dr. Mordecai I. Brownlee, vice president for student success at St. Philip’s College. Moseley will be available to share the alumni perspective during opening day of the program in Military City USA.

At St. Philip’s College, the signature professional development training program Operation College Promise designed nearly a decade ago by the New Jersey-based university educates and empowers veteran service providers to support veterans as they re-integrate to, through and beyond higher education. After participants arrive at the college at noon on June 5, their three-day experience will continue with a welcome from event organizers at 1:20 p.m., and their program will conclude with a completion ceremony June 7 at 4:30 p.m. in the Bowden Alumni Center. In between time, participants will hear from experts on veteran re-integration during the seven-module Certificate for Veterans’ Service Providers program. According to the university’s online schedule,experts the pre-registered audience learns from include national representatives and such local authorities as retired Air Force lieutenant colonel San Antonio District 10 Councilman The Honorable Clayton Perry; Army Col. Dave Raugh, the commander of the 502nd Force Support Group at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston, and retired Marine Corps major general and City of San Antonio Director of Military Affairs Juan G. Ayala. Some of the module topics are themed: A Primer on Military Culture; Invisible Injuries of Contemporary Warfare; An Update on the GI Bill and other Educational Benefits; and Creating and Maintaining Effective Community Collaboration.

The U.S. Veterans Administration indicates that more than one million veterans and service members are taking advantage of the Post-9/11 GI Bill as part of their preparation for jobs. Additional growth of that special veteran population on such college campuses as St. Philip's College in Military City USA is forecast over the next five years. Created in 2011 immediately following the end of the Iraq War and 10 years following 9/11, the St. Philip's College Good Samaritan Veterans Outreach and Transition Center (GSVOTC) at 202 Connelly St. in the city’s Denver Heights neighborhood demonstrates the commitment of the college in partnership with the City of San Antonio to provide no-cost services such as employment assistance, legal assistance, financial counseling and claims assistance and more for veterans and family members, said Moseley.
